Definition of a pendulum test

The British Standard of measuring slip resistance is by using a Pendulum Test. It is preferred in testing by Health and Safety Executives.

When conducting these tests, a minimum score of 36 or more is recommended for covering floors that are used in public places during dry and wet conditions.

The current UK slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) and HSE guidelines are the benchmark in conducting PTV tests.

The heel of a foot is replicated in the test. Measuring a rubber sole to a bare foot has different attachments while slipping on tiles in dry, and wet conditions. It has a more precise stimulation of conditions in the real world. The results of these tests are called Pendulum Test Values, and the level of potential slip risk is determined.

PTV values are classified into:

  • High Risk is 0-24.
  • Moderate Risk is 24-35.
  • Low risk is 36+.

What a pendulum test entails:

The pendulum swings across the surface of the tile in the test.

The steps are:

1) There is a zeroing of the machine (this test swing is done in a bid to make sure that the reading is correct, the machine works, and the surface is level in addition to forming a basis on all tests).

2) Reading is measured when it is swung across the face of the tile. The swinging of the pendulum is thrice. It is done five more times. PTV is determined when the last five swings is read averagely.

3) The tile is in different directions when the test is performed again, twice

This is to test the slip resistance using the tile. The reason lies on the fact that slipping risk on a tiled floor is not set to only one direction.

4) After the test has been done with a dry tile, it is repeated when water is applied to the tiles surface. In ensuring a uniform test, the machine is zeroed, and the tile is moved into the exact three positions. The average reading is taken as the result in a bid to ensure fairness. There is a determination of the slip resistance of the tile in wet conditions and a second reading.

Explanation of R ratings

R rating is not entirely determined with the PTV, though it serves as a useful guide. R9 is the start of the ratings.

The highest risk of slipping is R9 because R1-8 does not exist, and R9 is the lowest.

R rating using PTV

  • R9 rates 11-18
  • R10 rates 18-34
  • R11 rates 34-54
  • R12 rates 51-70
  • R13 rates 70+
